The ability to draw well is critical to a successful career in illustration. Six years ago, it was Don Stewart's ticket to an assignment with Kiwanis International's publications. Since then, Stewart's work has appeared regularly in the organization's Kiwanis and Keynoter magazines. "Don's extremely easy to work with," says Jim Patterson, director of design and printing for the magazines. "For the Kiwanis cover (right), I gave him a rough sketch to work from. He created the Keynoter cover (above) relying only on verbal instructions." Both pieces feature colored pencil details over an airbrushed-acrylic base.
